The Abbey of the Dormition — built between 1900 and 1910 under German Benedictine-auspices on a site of ancient churches—stands where tradition holds the Virgin Mary “fell asleep” [dormition] and was assumed into heaven.
With its neo-Romanesque form, the round basilica and tower rise above the western hill of Jerusalem, its layers of history reaching from Byzantine foundations through Ottoman transfers to modern walls of “old Jerusalem”.
