I never forget the hours I spent on its steps with my friends — talking, laughing, smoking our lungs out and losing all track of time. Bab al-Amud is more than an entrance; it’s a place where life gathers communities, generations, and where that energy and beat stays.
Damascus Gate, known in Arabic as Bab al-Amud, “Gate of the Column,” takes its name from a Roman pillar that once stood just inside the entrance — a landmark so central that distances to cities across Palestine were measured from it. Over time, the gate became the northern pulse of Jerusalem, where markets, voices, and movement flow constantly in and out of the Old City.
The gateway we see today is Ottoman, built above earlier Roman and Crusader arches still preserved beneath it — layers of stone that show how many eras this gate has carried.
